Festival of the Lion King at DisneyWorld’s Animal Kingdom

The first time we went to Disney World, everyone kept asking us if we had seen the Festival of the Lion King at Animal Kingdom. We had not. The second time we went, we decided we should see what all the fuss was about.

The festival is basically a celebration of The Lion King story, characters, and songs. And everyone on that first trip was right: it is a must-see show at Animal Kingdom.

It was inside a very dark room (once the doors were closed and the lights dimmed). Everyone fell quiet as the air inside began to move with a gentle breeze. Slowly, the sounds of the jungle began to come to life. Then, in the midst of all that darkness, there was an explosion of color and sounds. There were all sorts of puppets, dancers and people on stilts, moving and singing and getting the crowd excited. There is no doubt that it was definitely giving off a festival kind of vibe.

But that’s only part of it! There are also acrobats dressed like monkeys swinging from the high bar, rings, and trapeze. And a fire dancer twirling his torch with fire at both ends. Then there are audio-animatronic characters performing on huge moving stages.

The songs that are performed between the other entertainment acts are:

  • Timon singing “Hakuna Matata”
  • Scar singing,”Be Prepared”
  • Simba performing, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?”, “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King” and “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”

The finale brings everything to conclusion on the highest note possible as everyone sings “Circle of Life.”

It’s a great example of Disney Magic – you go in a little hot, a lot tired, and maybe even slightly cranky, but you come out smiling and happy to be where you are. No wonder it’s the most magical place on earth!
