Zoey’s Deli: More Than Just A Sandwich Shop

Zoey’s Deli: More Than Just A Sandwich Shop

During our Vermont vacation last fall, we went to the Skyline Drive at Mt. Equinox near the town of Manchester.  By the time we came down off the mountain, it was well past lunch time and we were starving. We stopped for gas and evaluated our lunch options.  The gas station just happened to be between two different eateries.  On our right was a pleasant looking sit-down restaurant and on our left was a deli.  Our dog was with us and it was an incredibly warm day for mid-October in Vermont (80+ degrees), so we didn’t want to leave her in the car.  Instead, we opted to get something to eat from the deli and take it with us as we headed on to our next destination.

Zoey's Deli

We arrived mid-afternoon and well past the lunch hour, but the line at Zoey’s Deli snaked through the entrance area and ended just outside the door.  I assumed that there must be a shortage of restaurants in the area, seeing as how it’s a town with a population of less than 5000.  But as we entered the building I began to see all sorts of accolades posted on the walls.  As it turned out, locals considered Zoey’s not just a good deli, but rather The Best Deli in Southern Vermont.

Zoey’s opened in 1991 with the basic principle that they should make everything they sell fresh on the premises.  And I do mean everything.  The bread for the sandwiches, the cookies that are as big as your head, even the potato chips. It’s all made right there, and it’s all delicious.

The salads sounded yummy, but don’t necessarily make for good car eating.  I had the Granny Smith sandwich – ham, cheddar, apple slices and honey mustard.  It was delicious!  Hubs and our daughter liked their selections as well.  If you ever find yourself in Manchester, Vermont, this is definitely the place to go for a bite to eat.

Zoey’s Deli & Bakery is located at 539 Test Depot Street in Manchester, Vermont. Telephone:  802-362-0005  The deli is open daily from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm.
